INFORMATION ON COVID-19

How did the infection start
The COVID-19 is a novel disease which started in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. It has spread to over 64 countries of the world including a case seen in Nigeria so far.

What causes it
It is a new strain of the virus that has not been previously identified in humans. It is a disease transmissible from animals to man. Bats are thought to be the reservoir of infection.

How is it transmitted?
From what is known so far, it may be spread through droplets and formites from a contaminated objects or surfaces. The droplets can be from sneezing and coughing.
How long does it take to show signs of the infection?
Onset of symptoms are from 2 to 14 days of being infected.
What do you observe if you have the infection?
Most cases are mild
fever, cough, breathing difficulties and history of contact with patient with the disease or travel to locality with active transmission or visit treatment facility for the disease.
How to prevent the disease
• Wash your hands frequently with soap under running water or use alcohol-based sanitizer if water is not available.
• Cover your mouth and nose properly with a tissue paper when sneezing and/or coughing. Dispose of the tissue properly immediately after use. You may also cough into your elbow if a tissue is not available.
• Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing
• Healthcare workers are always advised to observe standard infection prevention and control measures when attending to patients and take a travel history.
What to do if you see the signs of COVID-19
o Observe self-isolation immediately by staying indoors and avoiding contact with people
