REPORT OF FISU WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES TRIALS

The Students' Union proudly announces the outstanding performances of University of Ilorin athletes at the FISU (World University Games) Trials held at the University of Benin in Benin City, Edo State from May 8th to 14th, 2023. Twelve athletes and five officials represented our esteemed institution in this prestigious event.

Among the participants, six athletes showcased their exceptional skills in track and field events, with four athletes excelling in track events and two athletes showcasing their talents in field events. Moreover, the University of Ilorin proudly fielded four athletes in Badminton, consisting of two male and two female players, while two female athletes represented our institution in Taekwondo.

The University of Ilorin's athletes achieved remarkable success at the trials, securing multiple gold medals and qualification for further competitions. Notable achievements include:

1. Musa Kola Nurain (Educational Technology), a male sprinter, won gold medals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter events.

2. llaboya Alaba (Human Kinetics Education), a male Javelin thrower, claimed gold in the Javelin event.

3. Mustapha Ruqqayah (Human Kinetics Education), a female Discus thrower, emerged victorious in the Discus event.

4. Usman Qudus Afolabi (Human Kinetics Education), a male Badminton player, qualified among the top four athletes in the male category to represent Nigerian Universities in China.

5. Obanishola Sofiat (Human Kinetics Education), a female Badminton player, displayed exceptional skills and won all her matches in the female category, earning her place among the top four athletes in that category.

6. Aderibigbe Fareedah Adenike (English and Literary Studies), a female Taekwondo athlete, claimed the gold medal in the BANTAM 53KG category.

These exceptional athletes from the University of Ilorin have now earned the opportunity to represent Nigeria in the upcoming FISU World University Games, scheduled to take place in China later this year. We extend our sincere appreciation to the University Management and, in particular, the Sports Unit for their unwavering support and collaboration in nurturing our talented athletes.
