SCHOOL CHARGES PAYMENT

Modern Unilorites,

We're not unaware of the uproar, complaints and tensions generated due to the recent increment of charges by the University Management.

Being a responsive Union that we are, we have made sure to drive home your grievances, displeasures and articulations with regards to the increment.

Also, as a union whose motto is 'struggle to attain justice', we emphatically made sure to stay true to this motto while at the same time articulating our fellow colleagues' interest in a constructive manner for which the Union should be known for.

In the last 72 hours, series of official meetings have been held between the students' representatives (inclusive of Faculty Presidents) and several echelons of the school management over a possible reduction of the University charges, where the latter categorically made it known that the sudden increment could be traced to need of the University to improve its values and productivity by upgrading to a level of recognised academic excellence.

In their submission, the school management clarified that the modifications in the charges were not arbitrary, stressing that the modifications are in response to the realities of meeting up with the mandate of providing quality services. Thus, the adjustments in charges were unavoidably connected to costly maintenance of infrastructural facilities on campus which is now direct implication of meagre funding, high rate of inflation and the need to keep the school operating efficiently amidst the current realities.

The management also noted that in the process of arriving at the current increment, some student-related fees were not touched at all. This includes but not limited to hostel fees, matriculation fees and even the University charges for international students.

Fellow colleagues, we understand the effects of the economic downturn on every one of us and we share in it also. However, the current realities has necessitated the need for a new direction as drastic situations needs drastic solutions. In lieu of this, we implore and urge everyone to cooperate with the school management and begin payment of the University charges.

In a bid to cushion the effects of this increment and allow ample time for its payment, we have made arrangements with the school management to further extend the payment deadline, a development which will be made known in due time.

The Union alongside the school management urges all Modern Unilorites to go on with their normal activities and allow peace to reign. We also appreciate our fellow colleagues for being responsible enough and not allowing external forces or detractors to use them in destabilizing our common heritage of peaceful atmosphere to the benefits of all.

RE: SCHOOL FEES INCREMENT AND PARTNERSHIP THAT WORKS

The ultimate goal of leadership is responsibility. As a Union, we appreciate the unadulterated trust and unmatched support of all Unilorites. Today, we are much more convinced that our resolve to attain excellence is a collective struggle for no one to abandon.

The recent development with respect to adjustment in school charges was indeed a major challenge with attendant consequences on the ability and capacity of our administration in delivering the given mandate. Categorically, it is a litmus test that would go on to determine the dynamics of our administration.

However, Modern Unilorites, today's realities requires that we keenly evaluate the aftermath of the Federal Government's poor funding of institutions and, the drastic effect of the unending high inflation rate bedevilling the nation; a reflection on this metrics and parameter that contributed to the school charges increment guided our interactions so far.

In the last 24 Hours, we've worked round the clock in engaging all critical stakeholders both on the student arm and the management, and we've discovered a number of realities. The last 24-hours have been crucial given the nature of our engagements. We appreciate the Student Affairs Unit for the role well played. We are not unaware that our University is charging the least and, possibly, the most affordable federal institution of learning in today's Nigeria but we're particular about the learning outcomes and deliverables. To this end, in calming the storm and ensuring compliance, we urge the Modern Unilorites to continue with the high level cooperation with the administration while we would facilitate a Monitoring Committee to ensure promises are fulfilled, and improved welfare conditions of all with a view to obtaining value for money paid.

We won't relent in our engagements with the University management as we are determined to bring this to a logical conclusion.

Since government is a continuum, it is important to underscore that explanations provided thus far are pointers to the exigency of the present development. Indeed, the immediate past leadership of the Union must be appreciated for quality representation and engagement with the administration when it was muted and, the resolutions which culminated into present development were clearly linked to the metrics and undeniable financial downtime yet, our demands for quality service delivery.

We are relentless in our efforts in weathering the storm but we must emphasize the need for Unilorites to remain calm, law abiding and to trust the process.

Of a truth, we have come to a point in our journey where the partnership for the best in the interest of the system must work.

We shall keep you posted after another round of engagement this morning.

Accept the assurance of our best regards.

SCHOOL FEES INCREMENT

Modern Unilorites,

We have received several complaints and constructive criticism from you as regards the sudden increment in the school fees of returning students.

It is necessary to categorically state that, as a union, we were unaware of the sudden increment by the University Management as we weren't consulted nor informed before the increment was effected. However as a responsive Union that we are, upon receiving the news of the increment, we have immediately swung into action of which necessary consultations have begun and of course, its conclusion will be made known to all. The Union wishes to state emphatically that we are aware of the economic downturn in the nation currently and would not watch the unpleasant sight of our members being stretched further. Hence, our constructive engagement have since commenced.

In lieu of this, we will like to inform all Unilorites not to make any school fees payment yet until our consultations are concluded and we are very optimistic that it would be positive.

We however appeal to our fellow colleagues to remain calm as the Union is working round the clock to ensure that the collective interest of our teeming members is protected and justice is sincerely done without any biased consideration.

As a responsive Union, we understand the adverse effects of this situation on students and we are using this medium to assure you that we are on top of the situation.
