RE: NATIONAL PROTEST TO GET OUR CHILDREN BACK TO SCHOOL

MOBILIZATION FOR NLC NATIONAL PROTEST

It is so unfortunate that the inactions and lukewarmness of the Federal Government of Nigeria to yield to the yearnings and agitations of the varsity-based Unions has kept us out the four walls of our prestigious better-by-far University for more than five months.

Consequently, the leadership of the Union hereby strongly enjoin all Unilorites to participate in the National Protest organized by Nigeria Labour Congress against the lingering strikes which is scheduled to hold as follows:

Dates: Tuesday, 26th July 2022 and Wednesday, 27th July 2022
Take-off Points: NLC State Secretariats and Labour House Abuja

Unilorites in Ilorin should join the protest at the Labour House, Lajonrin Road, Behind Kwara State Ministry of Women Affairs, Offa Road, Ilorin, Kwara State by 7:00am while others should join in their respective state capitals.

As we are all tired and frustrated by the ugly situation, it is imperative that we go out in our numbers to gallantly participate in the protest as a means to advocate for quality education.

ROBBERY ATTACKS ON STUDENTS IN TANKE

We have received the disturbing reports of incessant robbery and violent attacks on our colleagues in Oko Oba and Oke Odo axis of Tanke. The perpetrators have successfully carried out their operations owing to the inadequate security apparatus in these areas. The increasing rate of these incidents is highly condemnable and totally unacceptable.

Proactively, the administration has made efforts to work with the security operatives and hostel owners via series of engagements to ensure security is beefed up in all student areas to secure lives and properties of our colleagues. However, it seems efforts are failing as we now record stories of attack on each day.

Consequently, we are charging the Kwara State Government, Kwara State Police Command, Tanke association of hostel owners and other stakeholders to take proactive and necessary steps in averting future attacks and make Tanke a safe place for us - Unilorites. This should however be done with impelling alacrity as we are running out of patience as a Union.

Nevertheless, we encourage our colleagues in the affected areas to remain calm and be security-conscious. Information regarding any strange movements or happenings should be reported to the Union and security operatives as soon as possible.

We pacify all victims of attacks and pray that almighty God grant them speedy recoveries. Accept the assurance of our commitment to remain people focused in the struggle to attain justice.

100 DAYS AT HOME: WE ARE TIRED

It is no longer a news that today marks a 100-day that we have been at home due to the lingering ASUU strike.

Recall that few weeks ago, we organized a peaceful protest in front of the University gate where we made our positions known to the Federal Government and the respective ministers hoping that the industrial action is sorted and we can continue our academics uninterrupted.

Though shortly after that time, we saw the meeting facilitated and chaired by the Chief of staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari but no tangible result till this moment.

As the lingering strike enters 100 days today, we want to appeal to the Federal Government, concerned ministries, critical stakeholders to immediately engage ASUU among other Unions so that the demands can be sorted out finally because our patience at home is running out.

We also want to publicly advise our colleagues to use this period to obtain their voters' cards to elect credible office holders as election looms.

We remain steadfast in our demands to reopen the schools as we will continue to engage necessary stakeholders on the next steps to take if the dispute is not resolved sooner than expected.
