DISCLAIMER NOTICE

Our attention has been drawn to the misleading news headline and false information published by Sahara Reporters and Daily Trust as regards the auto accident on our campus two days ago. As a union, we strongly condemn this unprofessional act and also call on the two media houses to correct the errors in order to avert a war against the student body.

The headline which read "Couple, two others killed as Nigerian University Students organise car racing contest" was not only misleading but malicious. We express our total disappointment as these dailies are seemed to be some of the highly respected online media outlets which people look up to for credible information.

For the sake of records, there was never a car racing contest by the vehicles involved. Rather, the collision was 'alleged' to have been caused by overspeeding according to eye-witness reports. However, security agents are still conducting investigations to unravel the mystery behind the incident. As such, we totally disclaim any information that report otherwise.

We hereby implore members of the public to disregard the malicious information as reported by both media outlets.

Sequel to the press statement earlier released today, we have noticed some misinterpretation and misconceptions trailing the information. This is to reiterate the fact that the Union does not take side on who is faulty between the korope driver and the driver of the Lexus car. Rather, we have only reported the incident as allegedly claimed by eye-witnesses.

Also, this is to express our unreserved apologies regarding a voice note made by an official of the Union on the said matter. Statement made in the audio is hereby retracted.

Students should hereby note that academic activities continue tomorrow though all lecturers have been urged not to make attendance mandatory.

As such, we advise our dearest colleagues to remain calm in their respective dealings.

UNFORTUNATE CAR ACCIDENT ON CAMPUS

We express our sympathy about the car accident that happened after the school dam. The unfortunate incident was alleged to have happened as a result of overspeeding of a private car which in turn hit a korope shuttle bus.

Also, we wish the injured victims quick recovery as they receive treatment at the hospital.

Students should however note that academic activities are suspended for today.

We hereby enjoin the members of the University community to remain calm.

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Today 25th November, 2021, the Students' Union commemorates the International Day for the elimination of violence against women.

Violence against women is a global phenomenon that exists in all countries and is a key factor to women's poor health. Gender disparities are based on and perpetuated by violence against women.

All acts of gender-based behaviours that are likely to cause women psychical, sexual, or psychological injury or suffering, or cause coercion or unjust denial of freedom, whether occurring in public or private life, are considered violence against women.

Women have been sexually harassed, denied educational opportunities, subjected to female genital mutilation, verbally tormented, tortured, raped and defiled, discriminated against, mocked, and labeled undeserving of qualifying positions.

In 2017, it was reported that 30% of women in the entire world were exposed to violence by husbands or partners in any period of their lives. The World Health Organization states that globally, 1 in 3 women experience physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime, mostly by an intimate partner.

Many abusers feel that violence against women is acceptable or even encouraged by society. They believe that they may act violently without being judged.
Violence against women not only destroys lives, it also jeopardizes development efforts and the establishment of strong democracies and peaceful societies.

Violence restricts women's choices, limiting their chance to get educated, earn a living, and engage in public life, resulting in poverty, which exposes them to more violence and leaves them with few options when violence happens.

The primary step towards eliminating violence against women is to speak up. SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

We want violence against women to end. Women around the world need to be heard; their voices should not be silenced nor their experiences go unnoticed.
